While beginning to work on their new record with producer Tony Berg, six-piece Los Angeles based group, Ozomatli, took time to record with Apogees brand new USB music interface, ONE. Within 2 hours time, Ozomatli wrote, arranged, and recorded an entire song using only a Mac, GarageBand, a single external mic and ONE. The guitar, conga, tambourine, and even the keyboard (micing the keyboards built in speaker) were all recorded using ONEs internal condenser microphone. The bass and Requinto guitar were recorded direct, using ONEs 1/4 Hi-Z instrument input. Taking advantage of ONEs 65 dB microphone preamp, the vocals were recorded via a standard dynamic mic into the XLR input. Shortly after this session the group hit the road, now each equipped with a ONE and a Mac laptop in order to continue pre-production for the new record.

The Fender Custom Shop Fusion Classic Stratocaster HSS is a truly stunning example of the artistry of the Fender Custom Shop and this small team of luthiers commitment to superior tone and playability. The Fender Custom Shop Fusion Classic is a dealer select model available only at ProGuitarShop and takes the classic styles of the Fender Stratocaster and incorporates modern features, updating this iconic instrument for the new decade. A review of the features of these guitars will demonstrate the unique qualities of these extraordinary instruments. First on hand is a LSR roller nut for unmatched tuning stability - so dig into big bends and get into some serious trem work knowing that this Stratocaster has exceptional tuning stability. Additionally, weve included Schaller deluxe staggered locking tuners. Weve also selected the pickups we feel deliver the classic strat tone, but without any 60 cycle hum. The Fusion Classic Strat utilizes Dimarzio pickups, placing an Area 58 in the neck and middle, and a Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II humbucker in the bridge. These dynamic pickups are perfect for clean chord work as well as overdriven solos. The Dimarzio alnico II single coils are completely hum canceling while retaining the vintage grit and sparkle of classic Stratocasters. The Dimarzio Area 58s are completely responsive to pick attack and what area of the string you pick. The responsiveness of these pickups is such that even height adjustments will provide either slightly compressed tones or crystal clean sounds. The Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Humbucker in the bridge is sweet with a superb bass response, and melds perfectly with the Dimarzio single coils just the right amount of punch and power to cut through the mix, but not overwhelming when you switch to this sweet vintage voiced bridge pickup. The switching system is an S1 switching system that opens up the tonal possibilities of the classic Stratocaster sound, by delivering a rich tonal palette. The S1 switching system also allows you to split the Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II humbucker, providing some real single coil spank when you need it. All of these features add up to a Stratocaster that is unmatched in its playability and tonal capabilities.

Telefunken AR51 tube microphones beautifully record acoustic guitars with warmth and smoothness in the midrange, a nice tight bottom-end, and an open and brilliant top. In the first segment the mic on the right was placed near the 12th fret of the guitar and the microphone on the left was placed over the guitarist right shoulder. This approach creates a very large and balanced stereo image. As you can hear, these mics are warm and very pleasing in the mid range and articulate in the top end without being overly bright. You will then hear a studio recording of a stereo pair of the Telefunken AR51's on a Martin HD28. In this setup we hear more body from the acoustic due to the placement of the the mics than we did in the previous example, nicely displaying the versatility of the Telefunken AR51's in the recording studios.
