ZVex Vextron Mastotron fuzz One of two new budget minded pedals unveiled during the 2009 NAMM show, the new ZVex Vextron Mastotron is here and the fuzz world may never be the same. Equally capable of providing fuzzy goodness for guitar, bass, keyboards or even digital recorders, this bad boy can be enjoyed by the whole family. The new ZVex Vextron Distortion features simpler graphics than you have come to expect, but the sounds are pure fuzz heaven. The ZVex Vextron Mastotron fuzz is based on a heavy silicon fuzz design using a 2N2222 transistor ala Jimi Hendrix. Zachary Vex says it has a bumble bee quality that stays solid for all settings. Knobs on the fuzzy little fellow are Volume, Tone, Pulse Width, Fuzz and Relax/Push. The Pulse Width knob allows you to change the wave form from square wave to narrow pulse waves and everything in between. The Relax/Push knob adds source impedance to the signal that enters the pedal. This allows the ZVex Vextron Mastotron to soften the input being sent by active pickups to maximize the fuzz effect and to adjust how the pedal reacts to how you play. There is also a Subs Switch that lets you dictate how much sub content is added to the signal. If you have been searching for a fuzz that allows the complete control over wave shape, sustain, attack, decay and texture of the fuzz, the ZVex Vextron Mastotron might be the ticket. This is a roundup of almost all Z Vex pedals (by Mr. Vex himself) taken from the NAMM exhibition at 2006 by gearwire.com. Mr. Vex keeps his usual humour and good mood (I love that!) despite the fatigue of the show... My favourite, of course, is the Wah. Beautiful handcrafted (and handpainted, too!) pedals, but some of them a bit overpriced - even above usual boutique pedals' prices - and a bit small to be used easily on stage (unless you tape it down and use your finger to switch it on/off to avoid stepping on the knobs as well...) To Mr. Vex's immense credit, they are really advanced in terms of electronic design, and not a copy of anything else (a refreshing move in today's world of pedal clones). The ZVex Vextron Distortion features the same distortion circuit as the Box of Rock with the addition of a gain boost switch and a sub frequency control switch. ZVex Super Duper 2-In-1 Boost / Overdrive Pedal Gentlemen/women, start your engines. This pedal is so dangerous that I'm sure I'll be getting a lot of complaint emails that people have blown up their amps using it. So let's just start this off by saying I WARNED YOU TO BE CAREFUL. When using this pedal, start off slow, and monitor your amp for potential damage. Don't have too much fun! OK, have too much fun, but don't blow up your amp in the process. Unless that's what you want, of course, and well, gosh darn it, it's your right. Good ol' Pete Townsend did it. Well, at least he poked his speakers out. All right, I'll try to stay on track here. Ahem. The SUPER-DUPER 2-IN-1 (TM) has two of my infamous but rather delightful Super Hard-On(TM) pedals in one small box, with two switches and LED indicators. HEY! I responded to your multitude of complaints that I don't put in LED's! Also, in this SUPER-DUPER 2-IN-1 (TM) (gosh I love saying that) is a Master volume control that lets you use it as an overdrive/distortion with any output volume. My my! How conventional, you say! Well, suffice to say, if it weren't there, you'd go deaf with both of those channels cranked up. This pedal is dangerously loud. Don't do what I did, and lean over in front of your speaker cabinet while turning it up. Ouch. Dang.

The Vexter Series Box of Rock is the Vexter Version of Z.Vex's first proper distortion pedal. The circuit and premium hand-assembled components are exactly the same as the original Box of Rock, only without the hand-painted box. The Vexter series are screen-printed to save on costs, thereby passing the savings on to you so you can afford two of them! The Vexter Box of Rock circuit was designed specifically to recreate the sonic experience of a dimed Marshall JTM non-master volume amp. The Box of Rock works beautifully as a boost / distortion circuit for any amp, but it is highly recommended that you plug it into a clean Marshall at least once for the intended effect. The ZVex Box of Rock is extremely sensitive to your guitar's volume control, and on all but the most extreme distortion settings will clean up to a pristine spit-shine as you roll back the volume knob. The boost section is capable of boosting your guitar signal to fifty times unity gain, so this thing can do some serious damage if you're prone to being haphazard about knob placement. The boost section and the drive and boost controls on the Box of Rock are based on ZVex's infamous Super Hard-On circuit, but with a few alterations to make the tone somewhat less glassy and more like an standard amplifier input section. Also like the SHO, the boost and drive knobs will crackle somewhat when in use, which is both expected and perfectly normal for this design. Fear not the crackly sounds.
